Supplier Spotlight: Faerch – Circularity in Food Packaging
At Alliance Online our products are manufactured by some of the most trusted brands and companies not just in the UK but worldwide. An example of this is one of our key disposables suppliers, Faerch.
Food Packaging Circularity
Over the last few years, the term circularity has become more mainstream, particularly amongst manufacturers.
“Circularity: Circularity from a sustainability and manufacturing perspective means that a product is created with its own end-of-life taken into account.”
The idea that products are created with their end of life also being accounted for is not a new concept, but the manufacturers have begun actively researching how to make their products fully circular. In order to achieve circularity products normally need to be disposed of in a very specific way to allow for the products to be reused and reinjected back into the product cycle.
One of the first forms of commercial circularity arguably came in the form of compostability. Products which were deemed “compostable” typically need to be collected by a commercial composting company to be taken to an industrial facility. The main issue with “compostable” products normally is they cannot be disposed of in domestic compost bins and instead must be taken to an industrial composting plant which can create and sustain the required conditions.
Due to this, there is now pressure from the government and industry for manufacturers to provide products which are easier to recycle and fully reintegrate with the product life cycle.
Enter Faerch
Faerch are a manufacturer of catering disposables who are closing the loop on their mono-material PET range, it allows them to use PET recycled plastics that can be fully recycled into new food grade products of the same quality, in an endless number of cycles.
Creating circularity in food packaging is reflected in Faerch’s work, acting responsibly to reduce the impact on society and the environment, setting ambitious targets, continuing to raise awareness regarding the below topics for disposable items:
- Material Matters: Faerch appreciate that where food packaging is concerned, the right material is paramount. They believe that packaging made from materials which can be recycled and repurposed is essential for the way forward. Equally, the material must meet all food standards otherwise it cannot be used in the catering industry.
- Better Collection is Required: Faerch firmly believes that in order to make sure PET and other recyclable materials are treated as a valuable resource and kept in the loop, the sorting and collection infrastructure needs strengthening.
- Legislation Supports: Finally, Faerch want legislation to demand a minimum share of recycled content in food packaging to act as a starting point to get the ball rolling. Minimum requirements cause changes in the functionality of collectors, sorters, recyclers which will hopefully result in long-term change.
