Cooking Equipment – Things to Consider

Power ratings and energy consumption should always be considered when purchasing prime cooking equipment.

Small energy savings made on one item of catering equipment can yield impressive cost savings when considered over a whole year’s operation.

For restaurant chains or operations with more than one outlet, savings multiplied across several kitchens can be very large. Appliance manufacturers should be able to supply energy efficiency information to allow informed buying decisions to be made. In not, consider buying from a manufacturer that can supply this information.

Consider products that are fitted with energy saving devices, and ask the manufacturers to quantify the potential savings when related to the kitchen operation and menu items.

HSE’s Shattered Lives Campaign: Catering & Hospitality

Weber Shandwick are working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on their new campaign to prevent slips, trips and falls in the workplace. Some interesting stats for the Catering and Hospitality sector have come out of their research – there were 562 major injuries and a further 1081 that resulted in workers having to take more than three days off work as a result of slips, trips and falls throughout 2008-2009 – resulting in costs in excess of £23million

The latest phase of the HSE’s Shattered Lives campaign has found that slips, trips and falls cost the UK around £800million per year – costing £99million to the building, construction and facilities maintenance sector alone. In this sector, there were 10 fatalities, 1,769 major injuries (and a further 2162 that resulted in workers having to take more than three days off work) caused by slips, trips and falls throughout 2008-2009.

These costs were all preventable and could have been avoided if the correct health and safety measures had been put in place.

In response, the HSE has launched a new phase of its Shattered Lives campaign, aimed at reducing slips, trips and falls in the workplace. The campaign involves raising awareness of the impact of slips, trips and falls in the workplace and direct people to the new Shattered Lives website (www.hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives ) for practical advice and guidance.

On the new campaign website, people can find out information on how they can easily, and cost effectively, reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls in the workplace, and see what other organisations, such as Sainsbury’s and First Line Digital, have done. Included on the site is an online tool (STEP) and a work at height access equipment toolkit (WAIT). Advice ranges from how to deal with spills and other slip risks, to the importance of using ladders correctly to reduce the risk of falling from height.
