The shape of a wine glass is very important, as it helps to contain the flavor and aroma of the wine. A common design trait is that generally, the opening of the glass is never wider that the point at which the bowl is at its widest.
Usually the glass is held by the stem as this keeps your hands away from the bowl, which could affect the temperature of the wine through your body heat. The stem also prevents the glass bowl becoming smeared with fingerprints.
Aside from Champagne flutes, typically wine glasses can be split into the 2 basic groups ‘red wine glasses’ and ‘white wine glasses’
Red wine glasses usually have a wide, round bowl to allow the contents space to breathe. White wine glasses are generally narrower as the wine is usually chilled and this shape helps maintain the temperature.
