The tradditional 'Nonic' Beer glass could soon be replaced with plastic glasses

In attempt to clamp down on glasses being used as weapons in pubs and bars across the country, the home office recently commissioned a new design of plastic pint glass. It is estimated that around 5,500 people are attacked and injured by bottles and glasses every year in England and Wales. The new glass will be made from shatter-proof plastic and it is intended to replace the traditional pint glass.

However, the British Beer and Pub Association said it did not want the new plastic glasses to be made compulsory.

For the drinker, the pint glass feels better, it has a nice weight and the drink coats the glass nicely. That’s why people go out for a drink, to have a nice experience. I would ask, is it necessary to replace the much-loved pint glass for safety reasons in the vast majority of pubs where there is no problem?” Neil Williams

The company in charge of designing the new glass have suggested a couple of approaches. One would be to coat the glass in a plastic substance to prevent it from shattering – that way it would still look and feel like a normal glass. The other is to completely change the pint altogether, much like the change from pewter tankards people used many years ago.

Are there any pub or bar owners out there who have any thoughts on this? Would you be prepared to use the new plastic glasses in your establishment? – Click here to leave a comment
